Testing

Beds and mattresses need to be tested to simulate real-life use, in order to check if every component meets all the recommended industry safety and performance standards. Safety and structural testing for strength and durability will help to highlight any potential issues, such as loose joints, sagging mattresses or mattress walls that breakdown/degrade in use. Testing provides an insight into the structural integrity, strength, durability, stability and safety of the product.

Key areas for assessing beds and mattresses:

-Structural testing of bunk beds

-Stability of bedsteads and bunk beds

-Children’s cots and beds

-Flammability

-Mattress performance

-Settlement - Roller durability – a large roller imitates a person sleeping and compressing the mattress

-Mattress cover fabrics - physical tests are carried out on the fabric to check for strength and durability

-Springs - tests to assess whether the springs are in sufficient volume, have appropriate wire diameter and are durable enough

-Polyurethane foams - tests to measure how well a foam recovers after prolonged compression and a pounding test to measure how much height and hardness the foam loses over use
